Wouldn’t you love to get more done? Be in a “flow” or in “the zone” and just constantly knock out projects left and right? Of course, you would! But how is it that some people are able to do this and yet others are just extremely unproductive?
Well, it is usually due to the flow channel…. When you are in the flow channel as described by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi book you would maximize your output and feel great about it!
Often times we over exhaust ourselves and get quite a bit done – unfortunately, it’s to the detriment of our own body, mentality, and psychology.
Take a look at the flow diagram below that shows you exactly what the flow channel is.
To be in the flow channel you have to be working on tasks that are actually designed for your personal self.
You will be the most productive if you stay in the flow channel. The flow channel as you can see is determined based on two primary things:
- Your skill
- The challenge
So what does this imply? It means that you cannot work on the same tasks over a year long period because your skill level keeps changing and you require a different challenge. (For some people that are slower at developing their skills due to job restrictions or just personal growth it may take 5 years or 10 years for them to grow out of this channel).
As you start being aware of the tasks around you can slowly decipher if you are in the flow channel or not by being aware of yourself and observing yourself from a third party perspective with your own eye. This is called observing-ego.
As you start observing yourself you will see if you are bored. If you are bored and this usually means that you just don’t have a great enough or big enough challenge. You need to then increase the difficulty level of what you are doing or the complexity of it.
If you find yourself having anxiety or stress, then it’s possible that you are taking on too big of a challenge for your skill level or your mental capacity.
If you stay in the flow channel as much as possible throughout the day you will accomplish a great deal of more tasks. By continuing to stay in the flow channel for multiple days, weeks, months, and years you will accomplish a great deal in your lifetime!
