I know at times we get a little jealous… we want to have what someone else has (me included)….
Maybe your best friend just purchased a brand new car and you are driving an old beat up Toyota and now you want something fresh and new…
It could be that you see most of your friends in new clothes, but yet you are still wearing your old clothes from a few years ago (even though they may have a few pin-holes in them)…
This happens to everyone! We all look up to the spending habits of our friends or the people around us. We are constantly trying to keep up with “The Jones” – but no matter how successful we get or the things we buy, at each new level there will be a new Jones.
My Millionaire Friend
One of my great friends that I know deeply who is a multi-millionaire has opened my eyes a bit to this concept of the Jones. It is funny to me because he always cuts his own grass… wears old shoes… has older cars… (and a few really nice expensive cars)…
He does have a few expensive items that he likes such as a few boats, jet-ski’s, motorcycles, and tons of “guy toys.” However if you look at him at a shopping mall he appears like a poor man since he walks around in sneakers that look old, socks that appear normal, and a t-shirt with a hole in it. Yet he makes a few million dollars every single year.
I know that at times we all judge people based on their appearance, but remember that different people value different things. You can’t keep up with everyone.
If your goal is to surpass them then you will utterly be disappointed. Your happiness diminishes the more you try to keep up with the Jones.
Let all that go and focus on the important things like creating remarkable memories with the people around you and building connections. It will bring you more happiness than chasing the next Jones.
There will always be another Jones out there unless you are someone like Bill Gates of course :)
